Recently, a very wealthy executive with vast resources from a major company walked into our social enterprise called Thistle Farms. Founded more than 10 years ago, Thistle Farms provides employment for the women of Magdalene, a residential community for women who have survived trafficking and deep childhood traumas and who also have criminal histories of prostitution and addiction.

Today, Thistle Farms employs over 35 women who manufacture and sell all natural bath and body care products. Our stores and customers demand a lot from us and rightly so. They demand we use quality ingredients, pay living wages, and buy with fair trade in mind. They expect us to be concerned about the well-being of all the women and to help with education, training, and housing as integral components of our mission. We depend on meeting all those expectations and rely solely on private gifts and sales to support our mission. We take nothing from the federal or state government and raise over a million dollars a year to support the mission.

This executive came for a tour and offered to give us some used, broken equipment her company no longer needed. I didn’t want it. It was going to be stuff I was just going to have to reload in my car to drop off somewhere else. As I thanked her and carried the discarded items into our building, I felt like crying. This person had the potential to really make an impact and to partner for the greater good, and she had brought unusable stuff that I was now going to have to haul off and then write a thank you. As the founding volunteer director for Thistle Farms I have long ago bought into the myth that beggars can’t be choosers.

As a professional beggar and priest for more than 20 years, I now understand beggars have to be choosy. We have to be choosers, or we are just wasting time gathering and disposing things we can’t use. We have to be choosers so the relationship between giver and receiver is genuine and love is shared in the exchange. We have to be choosers to honor the place of alms in our lives of faith. The gift needs to be appropriate and honor the work of the beggar.

In my world it doesn’t matter to me if the gift is big or small. That is not the point. The point is that we can’t give from our excess and trash and think we have been generous. I have gotten used bras, couches soaked in cat pee, and single socks in my tenure as a not-for-profit beggar. I have also received lavish and sweet gifts from the heart that have taught me that love is sufficient. Beggars will always be with us. We are a blessing in this world, not a curse. Beggars remind the world that all we have is a gift, and when we share our resources there is more than enough. Beggars have to be choosers. That is the only way giving still has depth and meaning.

Our inbox and our EVO 4G LTE forums have just lit up with some potentially good news — Best Buy is letting pre-order customers know that they're expecting a May 23 release date of the phone that's currently hung up in Customs. We just checked back in with HTC, and it's got nothing new on its end, but at this point any movement is welcomed. 

The EVO was supposed to be released at 8 a.m. Friday, May 18. But it and AT&T's HTC One X, which has been listed as out of stock for several days, have been held for review by the International Trade commission over issues with patents own by Apple. (If you haven't seen it, The Verge has nice piece showing that HTC has worked around the patent in question, so it's unclear whether there's a substantiative holdup, or if the delay is bureaucratic.)

On Wednesday, Sprint on its Community blog acknowledged that the EVO was being delayed by the Customs hold. All other questions have been referred to HTC.

It should be mentioned that Best Buy's new shipping date doesn't necessarily have to match up with Sprint's (or anyone else's for that matter), so stick around and hopefully we'll get something a little more official soon.

If President Obama and congressional Democrats want to raise the debt ceiling, Mr. Boehner will say in a speech later on Tuesday, they’re going to have to hew to what might be called the Boehner principle: Every dollar of new debt must be paid for by at least a dollar of reduced government spending.

?This is the only avenue I see right now to force the elected leadership of this country to solve our structural fiscal imbalance,” Boehner will say, according to excerpts of his remarks at the Peter G. Peterson Institute in Washington.

That’s the position to which Boehner and House Republicans eventually held Democrats to raise the debt ceiling last August.

Of course, that trip to the fiscal precipice sent Congress’s approval rating plummeting into the single digits, crushed consumer economic confidence, and helped spur an unprecedented downgrade in America’s credit rating.

Democrats have called for an approach that uses both increased taxes and lower government spending to cut the government’s debt.

Boehner’s principle “is a simplistic characterization of the issue that confronts us,” said Rep. Steny Hoyer (D) of Maryland, the House minority whip, in a talk with reporters Tuesday. “The Democrats are clearly going to look at and press for a balanced response. The debt limit should not be a political issue. Mr. Boehner knows it shouldn’t be political.”

Congress is putting off nearly every substantive policy issue until after the November elections. In addition to the debt ceiling, the heavy issues awaiting Congress between Election Day and the end of year include the Bush tax cuts, unemployment benefits, the budget-slashing “sequester,” and Medicare payment rates for doctors.

On taxes, however, the House will move to lay the groundwork for a deal well before the lame-duck session, Boehner says. The House will vote on taxes before the election to “give Congress time to work on broad-based tax reform that lowers rates for individuals and businesses while closing deductions, credits, and special carveouts,” according to excerpts of Boehner’s speech.

The House legislation would also enable an “expedited process” for tax reform in 2013. This could mean, Boehner says, that “if we do this right, this will be the last time we ever have to confront the uncertainty of expiring tax rates.” He continues in the prepared remarks, “We?ll have replaced the broken status quo with a tax code that maintains progressivity, taxes income once, and creates a fairer, simpler code.”

But Boehner doesn’t rule out nudging the government along with incremental debt-ceiling deals.

“If [adhering to the Boehner principle] means we have to do a series of stopgap measures, so be it ? but that?s not the ideal,” Boehner will say Tuesday. “Let?s start solving the problem. We can make the bold cuts and reforms necessary to meet this principle, and we must.”

The Boehner principle does not, on its face, rule out tax hikes or other increased revenues to help address the fiscal issues. A mix of tax increases and spending cuts have been offered by a variety of fiscal-reform commissions, including the widely hailed Simpson-Bowles group.

But a Boehner aide says in an e-mail, “Tax hikes are not ? and never have been ? on the table.”

NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin are slated to lift off from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome tonight at 11:01 p.m. EDT (0301 GMT Tuesday). They’ll ride a?Soyuz spaceship?into orbit, ultimately berthing with the station early Thursday morning (May 17), NASA officials said.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin were originally scheduled to launch on March 29, but a botched pressure test?cracked their Soyuz crew capsule. The flight was pushed back by a month and a half to allow enough time for Russian space contractor RSC Energia to ready a new capsule for service.

Once aboard the space station, the three spaceflyers will bring the orbiting lab back to its full complement of six occupants. Their fellow Expedition 31 crewmembers ? NASA’s Don Pettit, Dutchman Andre Kuipers and cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko ? have had the station to themselves since April 27.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin will live in orbit for the next four months, eventually returning to Earth in mid-September, NASA officials said. The three newcomers will all serve as flight engineers under the command of Expedition 31 chief Kononenko. [Quiz: The Reality of Life in Orbit]

New space experiences

Acaba, 44, is a native of Inglewood, Calif., and is making his second career spaceflight. He has been to the station once before, on the?space shuttle?Discovery’s STS-119 mission in 2009. But he returned ?to Earth after just 13 days on that flight, so this will be a new experience for him.

“I’m looking forward to going from someone who worked for two weeks in space as a shuttle crewmember to now living in space ? living and working in space ? as a long-duration crewmember,” Acaba told reporters earlier this year. “Personally, I think it’ll be a much different experience ? instead of just a whirlwind, ‘let’s get the job done’ to, you know, ‘now this is your home.’”

Acaba is one of NASA’s educator astronauts and taught high school and middle school before joining NASA’s astronaut ranks in 2004.

Padalka, 53, is a veteran spaceflyer making his third trip to the International Space Station on the Expedition 31 flight. A father of three from Krasnodar, Russia he has racked up a total of 585 days in Earth orbit.

Brevard County sheriff’s investigators say a mother took the lives of her four children during an early morning confrontation, calling three of them back into her home to fatally shoot them before turning a gun on herself, law enforcement sources report.

Updated at 1:20 p.m. ET: A Florida mother killed her four children and then shot herself Tuesday morning as Brevard County, Fla., deputies closed in on her Port St. John home, authorities said.

Deputies said the mother, identified as Tonya Thomas, 33, sent a warning text message to a friend before the shootings, but the friend didn?t see the text until later.

Three of the children, at least one already wounded, fled to the home of a neighbor who had been awakened by gunfire, but Thomas immediately called the children back and killed them, sheriff?s spokesman Tom Goodyear said.

The neighbor called 911 as they left his home, Goodyear said.

?She was very calm,? Goodyear said of the neighbor?s report. ?She called them back and they walked back to the house.?

Arriving deputies found one of the children, Pebbles Johnson, 17, lying in the front yard of the Bright Avenue home and spotted a person at the front door, Goodyear said. The person ducked back inside after seeing deputies, he said. The teen was declared dead when she was transferred to an ambulance.

As a SWAT team arrived, officers heard gunshots inside. SWAT officers entered through a back sliding door just before 7 a.m., and found Thomas and three other children dead. They were identified as Joel Johnson, 12, Jazlin Johnson, 13, and Jaxs Johnson, 15.

Goodyear said the children?s father, who was separated from the family, had been notified of the deaths.

Also, a friend of Thomas told police she texted him during the night that she wanted to be cremated with her four children, Goodyear said. However, the friend did not see the text until after he woke up Tuesday morning and the incident was over. The friend, who was not identified, called police after seeing news of the deaths, he said.

Goodyear said police previously responded to the Florida ?Space Coast? home, about 15 miles south of Cape Canaveral, for domestic disturbance calls involving Jaxs Johnson. He said the most recent call was about a month before Tuesday?s shootings.

Goodyear said that of Tuesday afternoon, authorities had no motive for the killings.
